Castor oil is a thick, pale-yellow vegetable oil pressed from the seeds of castor plant. Its defining feature is its fatty acid profile: roughly 85–95% ricinoleic acid, a rare hydroxylated fatty acid found in almost no other common plant oil. This compound is responsible for most of castor oil's properties — its unusual viscosity, moisturizing (humectant) behavior, anti-inflammatory effects, and laxative action.
